If the energy companies are pricing your bills too high and you just can't afford to pay them, then please please call them and let them know.
Every single person that has done this has received a reduction in the rate and the direct debit. (although personally I would await the bill rather than pay upfront). But if you want to continue paying direct debit and it not go up a huge amount simply call them and raise a complaint. Just put it on the line that and say there is a vulnerable person living with you and you simply cannot afford the rates they are charging. Ask them to move it back to what you were paying previously. There is no justification for the increase, they just hope enough people will pay it and not complain. My 78 year old mum called them and told them they either lowered the bills or they would have to chase her through the courts and she didn't want to do that at her age. They were very kind and lowered them immediately. The trick is to always be nice to them, if you are nice to others they will normally try their best to be nice to you.
