How theives managed to steal over £5,000 from someones account using just a sim card and credit card number. The banks tell us their apps are secure, but it turns out quite a few people recently have found out to their peril that they are anything but. One lady went to the gym, she had put her phone and purse in a locker. The lockers were broken into, theives took her phone and debit card. In the hour she was at the gym, they stole over £s5,000 worth of goods using her debit card. How did they do it if they didn't have a pin and her phone was secure. Well her phone was secure, but her sim card wasn't. They simply removed the SIM placed it in another phone, they have the debit card so they know what app to download for banking. Sadly the only security they need for the banking is the card number and the phone number, with this they can reset the login code, and as they had the SIM card they had access to both. What is even worse is that on the app all your bank accounts are together many even link others from other banks. This lady had a savings account which showed on her app. They transferred all her savings into her current account. Now the really scary thing is in the app there a function which allows you to see your PIN. They simply got the pin from there and went on a spending spree and every time they were asked to authenticate they would do so on the phone they had.
The most important thing you can do right now to stop this is to put a pin number on your sim card. And don't carry your phone and your bank card together. Banks need to increase their security on this, there should be another level of security not just the card number and phone. Please share this far and wide so we can all do at least put a PIN on our SIM card and not carry our phone and debit card together.
